Ludwig von Beethoven, eternally sick and ultimately deaf, turned a life of pain into an ode to joy. Contemporary Ukranian composer Bohdana Frolyak says she wants to believe in hope. During World War II, Avril Coleridge-Taylor found things bad but believed they would get better. This theme of moving from darkness to light unites the pieces on this program. Each ends with an optimism and joy absent from the opening measures.
