About the event
Lyricism ties these five pieces together, which all incorporate transcendent, almost spiritual elements.
Sibelius’ intent in his symphony was to bring the listener "pure spring water" as opposed to his contemporaries’ "cocktails of every hue and description." Frank pairs a Benjamin Britten timpani motif with Ccollanan María, a religious tune from Cusco, an Incan capital.
Pann’s My Cross, premiered in this version by internationally renowned saxophonist and ASU professor Christopher Creviston, approaches easy listening territory. In contrast, Polevá’s piece is a mournful yet hopeful lament for the civilians slaughtered in Bucha in the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
